Velocity Field Estimation Using GPS Precise Point Positioning: The South American Plate Case
نویسندگان
چکیده
GPS is essential in applications that require high (sub centimeter) positioning precision, such as in the velocity field estimation of tectonic plates. Normally, GPS relative positioning is used for this kind of application. However, GPS Precise Point Positioning (PPP) is a very simple and efficient method, which, as shown in this paper, can also be applied. This paper outlines the use of PPP for processing GPS data. Station coordinates and velocity vectors are inferred, and an estimation of the South American Plate rotation parameters (ΩX, ΩY and ΩZ) is given. The PPP repeatability of station coordinates is better than 9mm, and comparisons of the final solution with other sources, such as ITRF, NNR-NUVEL 1A and APKIM 2000 generally show good agreement. The formal precision of the station velocity is in the order of 0.6 mm/year, for horizontal and vertical components, which appears to be an optimistic value, and the quality of the estimated rotation parameters is better than those from other sources.

Investigation of MODIS mission capability in tropospheric delay estimation for precise point positioning
Tropospheric delay is always considered as one of the factors limiting the accuracy of GPS. In this paper, the three-dimensional ray tracing technique is proposed to calculate the tropospheric delay. The ability of the MODIS mission to calculate the tropospheric delay is also examined. For this purpose, an area in central Europe was selected and a MODIS acquisition on 2008/08/01 was studied. In...
متن کاملEstimation and Analysis of Precipitable Water Vapor Using GPS Data and Satellite Altimeter
Determination of water vapor in the atmosphere plays an important role in forecasting weather conditions and precipitation studies. For this reason, it is very important to study the tropospheric delay, especially the wet component, which is due to the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere. In this paper, the amount of water vapor was estimated by altimeter satellite radiometer and GPS data...
متن کاملMotion of the South Bismarck Plate, Papua New Guinea
The absolute motion of the South Bismarck Plate was first estimated by Tregoning et al. [1998] from three site velocities estimated from Global Positioning System (GPS) observations. We report an improved estimate of the Euler vector for this plate using site velocities derived from new GPS data which include the velocity of a site located∼25 km from the pole of rotation. The GPS velocities of ...
متن کاملIntegration Scheme for SINS/GPS System Based on Vertical Channel Decomposition and In-Motion Alignment
Accurate alignment and vertical channel instability play an important role in the strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS), especially in the case that precise navigation has to be achieved over long periods of time. Due to poor initialization as well as the cumulative errors of low-cost inertial measurement units (IMUs), initial alignment is not sufficient to achieve required navigation ac...
متن کاملMotion and rigidity of the Pacific Plate and implications for plate boundary deformation
[1] Using up to 11 years of data from a global network of Global Positioning System (GPS) stations, including 12 stations well distributed across the Pacific Plate, we derive present-day Euler vectors for the Pacific Plate more precisely than has previously been possible from space geodetic data. After rejecting on statistical grounds the velocity of one station on each of the Pacific and North...
